Humanitarian aidReport for 2008 2008 was a record year for our Humanitarian Aid Distributions. We distributed a large container of humanitarian goods and other smaller donations in Afghanistan with a value of $110,507. The goods were distributed to a many poor people in Kabul as well as other provinces, as described below. Fabric and sewing supplies are still to be distributed to A4T 2 in 2009.
In mid-January 2008, 951 boxes of supplies were shipped to A4T via Bagram Air Base. These boxes were stored and processed for shipment through the Denton Program to Afghanistan in 2007 by the New Hope Men`s Fellowship (NHMF), in Castle Rock, Colorado. This was their seventh and last humanitarian shipment for A4T and we can never thank them enough for their tireless assistance.
The boxes in this shipment included clothing, blankets, fabrics, shoes, schoolbooks, computers, clothing, seed packets, sewing machines, roofing mesh, wheelchairs and crutches. Many of the boxes were stored over the summer at our warehouse.
In April, 273 boxes were distributed among the 557 returning refugees families in a village northeast of Kabul. This effort was carried out by volunteers from the Bare Roots delegation, led by Asma Eschen, in coordination with Ministry of Returning Refugees. Many of the boxes contained donated blankets and clothing collected from Afghan Relief Organization. Many boxes were filled with hand knit garments and blankets made by volunteers in our affiliate, afghans for Afghans.
A4T distributed 150 boxes of wheelchairs and crutches to Emergency Hospital for Civilian War Victims, 46 boxes to Handicap International and 59 boxes to the Emergency Hospital. The supplies totaling 200 wheel chairs and 400 crutches were collected by Hassina Omar in memory of Khadija Omar who started the charity: Handicapped Children of Afghanistan. A4T also distributed humanitarian supplies to other charity organizations and some rural villages.
In addition, 30 boxes of donated clothing from Americans were distributed in poorer districts of Kabul. Boxes of supplies were also distributed to students at Ibnesena High School, and to disadvantaged citizens in Kabul.
